The short answer

Velocity Points value by redemption

Usually 1c–2c on an economy Reward Seat, the most common good use. In business class a point can be worth 2c–4c; as gift cards it's 0.5c–0.56c. A Velocity Point has no fixed cash value: it's worth whatever the thing you redeem it on would otherwise cost you.

Reward Seats

Points prices set by distance and cabin, on Virgin Australia and partners like Qatar Airways and Singapore Airlines. The best value: 1c–2c a point in economy and 2c–4c in business. Domestic economy seats have started from 5,900 points since January 2025, when some partner routes went up.

Any Seat with Points + Pay

Any Virgin Australia seat, paid partly or fully with points: every 2,500 points takes $15 off, so about 0.6c a point. Easy to book, but well below a Reward Seat.

Upgrades

Upgrading a paid Virgin Australia fare with points can return more per point than anything else, but you need an eligible Choice or Flex fare, and an upgrade seat has to be available.

Hotels & car hire

About 0.6c–0.7c a point.

Gift cards & Velocity store

0.5c–0.56c a point. The easiest way to spend points, and the lowest return.

Do the maths

Work out what any redemption is worth

Take the cash price, subtract the taxes and fees you still pay when you use points, and divide by the points needed. A flight costing $220 in cash, or 9,900 points plus $40 in taxes, works out at ($220 − $40) ÷ 9,900 = 1.8c a point. Anything under about 0.6c and you'd do as well with Any Seat or gift cards.
FAQ

Points value questions

How much is one Velocity Point worth?

Between 0.5c and 4c, depending on what you redeem it on: 2c–4c in business class, 1c–2c on economy flights, 0.6c–0.7c on hotels and car hire, 0.6c on Any Seat with Points + Pay, 0.5c–0.56c as gift cards.

Can you convert Velocity Points to cash?

Not directly: Velocity doesn't pay points out as cash. The closest options are gift cards and the Velocity store, at 0.5c–0.56c a point, or Any Seat with Points + Pay at about 0.6c. Reward Seats almost always return more.

Do Velocity Points expire?

Your points expire after 24 months without activity. Earning, redeeming or transferring points in resets the clock to 24 months, but Family Pooling and family transfers only extend it by one month, and expired points can't be reinstated.

What's the difference between a Reward Seat and Any Seat?

Reward Seats have set points prices by distance and limited availability, and return 1c–2c a point in economy. Any Seat lets you put points towards any Virgin Australia fare at about 0.6c a point.

Is there a Velocity points calculator?

Yes — the calculator at the top of this page. Put in any balance and it shows what Velocity Points are worth on every redemption we track, ranked best first, rather than one blended number. It reads the same rates as the PointFarm app, so the two can't disagree.

How do I work out what my Velocity Points are worth?

Multiply your balance by the cents-per-point of the thing you would actually redeem on. That last part is what most calculators skip: Velocity Points are worth anywhere from 0.5c to 4c each depending on the redemption, so a single average is misleading. The calculator above runs every route at once.

What's the best way to use Velocity Points?

Business reward seats return the most, 2c–4c a point, if you can find the seat. Gift cards & Velocity store are the easiest, at 0.5c–0.56c, and the weakest use.

Where these numbers come from. Only some redemptions have a published rate: Flybuys and Everyday Rewards money off, Flybuys gift cards and Bank for Christmas are all 2,000 points = $10. Both airline transfers are 2:1, per each program's own help pages. Everything else — Flybuys Rewards Store products, and anything spent through Qantas or Velocity — has no fixed rate, so those ranges come from independent 2026 valuations. What you actually get depends on the item or seat you pick, and programs can change their pricing at any time. Rates checked 22 October 2026.
