What a multiplier is worth

Both programs pay a point per dollar as standard and value a point at 0.5c (2,000 points = $10), so the multiplier converts straight to cash back: 5x = 2.5% · 10x = 5% · 15x = 7.5% · 20x = 10% · 30x = 15%. Anything under 10x is barely worth a special trip.

The catch is always the cap

These offers are capped — commonly two or three cards per transaction — and exclude Visa, Mastercard and the retailer's own cards more often than not. The cap is what decides whether an offer is worth a trip, so read it before you go.

About 10% off. You earn 20 points per dollar instead of one, so a $100 gift card returns 2,000 points, and at the published 2,000 points = $10 rate that's $10. The catch is the cap: most offers limit you to two or three cards per transaction.

Can you buy gift cards with points?

That's the other direction, and it's a worse deal. Flybuys money off explicitly excludes gift cards, and buying airline gift cards with Qantas or Velocity points returns well under 1c a point. Earning points on a gift card you were going to buy anyway is the good side of this trade.
